Bald-Faced Hornets
Bald-faced hornets build the large, gray, football-shaped paper nests you see high in trees or tucked under a roofline. They’re technically a type of yellow jacket rather than a true hornet, but they’re more territorial and will come after a perceived threat from several feet away.
A Quick Note on Carpenter Bees
Carpenter bees get lumped in with this group because people see a big black-and-yellow insect drilling into a deck rail or fascia board and assume the worst. They’re more of a wood-damage problem than a sting problem. The males hover around aggressively but can’t sting at all, and the females rarely do. Still worth knowing the difference before you spray the wrong thing.
