Nothing ruins the holiday baking mood quite like opening a bag of flour and finding it already has residents. Tiny moths fluttering around the kitchen at night, little beetles in the cereal box, or fine webbing in a cracker package are the classic signs of pantry pests, and November is prime time for them in Holly Springs. Holiday grocery runs stock the pantry fuller than any other month, which means more chances for a hitchhiker to come home in a bag.

Here is the short version. Pantry pests almost always arrive in food packaging, not through a dirty kitchen. Toss anything infested, move everything else into hard containers with tight lids, wipe the shelves down, and check the new groceries before they go in the pantry. If the moths keep coming back after a full cleanout, or they have spread past the pantry into other rooms, that is when a professional treatment makes sense, and our team can sort out what is actually living in there.

Who is actually in your pantry

Most pantry invaders fall into a few familiar groups. Indian meal moths are the small brownish gray moths that flutter around the kitchen in the evening and leave fine silky webbing in flour, cereal, and dried fruit. Weevils are tiny beetles that show up in rice, flour, and pasta, often already inside the package when you buy it. Grain beetles and flour beetles are even smaller, and they love cake mix, crackers, spices, and pet food just as much as flour.

Ants and roaches are not pantry pests in the strict sense, but they are regular kitchen visitors this time of year too, and they follow the same rule. If it smells like food and they can reach it, they will. Our ant control and roach control pages cover those two separately, since they need a different approach than a moth in the flour.

How they got in (it is probably not your fault)

Pantry pest eggs and larvae are tiny enough to hide in a sealed-looking bag of flour, a box of pasta, or a bag of birdseed from the store. The package looks fine on the shelf. Weeks later, in a warm pantry, the eggs hatch and the adults start flying around your kitchen.

They can also wander in from a garage stash of pet food or birdseed, or spread from one infested box to the boxes next to it. That is why a single bad bag can turn into a whole-shelf problem, and why tossing only the box you saw them in sometimes does not finish the job.

The pre-holiday pantry cleanout

Do this before the big holiday grocery runs, not after.

  • Pull everything out of the pantry, shelf by shelf, and check each package for webbing, tiny larvae, or little beetles. When in doubt, throw it out.
  • Wipe every shelf, corner, and crevice with warm soapy water, including the shelf brackets and the lip where the shelf meets the wall. Let the shelves dry fully before anything goes back.
  • Move flour, sugar, rice, cereal, pasta, and baking mixes into glass or hard plastic containers with tight-fitting lids. Cardboard and thin plastic bags are no barrier to a determined pantry beetle.
  • Store pet food and birdseed in sealed containers too, and keep them out of the pantry if you can. The garage bag of birdseed is a classic starting point for a kitchen problem.
  • Check new groceries before they go on the shelf, especially flour, rice, and anything bought in bulk. A quick look at the seams and corners of the bag catches most hitchhikers early.

One more holiday tip. If you are stocking up early for baking, freeze flour and grain products for a few days before storing them, so any eggs that came home from the store never hatch in your pantry.

When to call us

A single infested box, handled with a cleanout, is a do-it-yourself job. Call us when the problem does not stay in that lane. Moths that return within a week or two of a full cleanout, pests showing up in rooms far from the kitchen, or a pantry that seems to refill itself no matter how much you toss are signs the source is somewhere you have not found yet, like a forgotten box in the garage, a bulk bin in a utility closet, or a gap letting kitchen pests in from outside.

That is where a trained eye helps. Our technicians find the source and treat the areas that need it. We are a local company founded in 2022 by two high school friends who have been in this industry since 2004, and our plans start at $49 a month. If pests come back between visits, our No-Hassle Callback Guarantee means we come back too.

Get the pantry ready before the guests arrive

A clean pantry is one less holiday surprise. Toss the suspects, seal the keepers, and check new groceries at the door. If the moths are winning, let us take a look before baking season peaks.
